This is the tiny green stuff that grows in the channel and makes its way out to the lake on windy days or by boat traffic
Milfoil is the weed that nearly took over our lake a few years ago. It has been brought under control through chemical treatment
but will come back aggressively if we don't continue with a treatment program.
Pondweed has spread to nuisance levels. There are several varieties in Sherman Lake.
Potamogeton diversifolius
Illinois Pondweed and Variable-Leaf Pondweed appear to be the dominant forms in the lake. These are native species that have become
a problem due to the level of nutrients and muck available to support rapid growth. These are the weeds that are now breaking
the surface particularly on the South end of the lake.
Aquatic plants can be categorized as submerged, emergent, floating or algea. This page contains the most prevalent types of each in
Sherman Lake.
In addition, we need to be on the lookout for another invasive species: Hydrilla. This nasty weed has been
spotted just south of the Michigan border in several Indiana lakes.
According to information from the Michigan Lakes and
Streams Association, Hydrilla is even more aggressive and harder to control than milfoil! Contact us immediately if you spot
excessive weed growth of any kind! We need to be particularly vigilant in inspecting around the boat launch as this is the likely
entry point for new invasive species.
